Judges comments: Some very tough competition in this category. Very close between 1, 2, and 3rd place. In faces I really enjoy the light hearted smiles. great photo from an everyday assignment. Treeshadow photo is a very strong and dramatic use of light and color. Nice job.

3rd - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Touch Football"
HM - Scott Heckel, The (Canton) Repository, "Trail Bologna"
HM - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Shark Exhibit"

Judges comments: Pretty strong category. 1st had nice juxtaposition of the flag and hair with the statue in the background. The "quietness" of the 2nd place entry is what made the photo. 3rd had nice layering, but suffers from loose cropping.

General News
1st - Michael Chritton, Akron Beacon Journal, "Death Sentence"
2nd Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Match Day"
3rd - William A. West, , "Graveside Service"
HM - Andy Morrison, The (Toledo) Blade, "Return to the Mosque"
HM - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Stations of the Cross"

Judges comments: A very strong category. Emotion and moments matter. All five winners did an excellent job. First place rose to the top for both a well captured moment and excellent layering of emotion.

1st - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Mango Roll"
2nd - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Steinway"

3rd - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Raising Grandchildren"
HM - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "John Benner"
HM - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Worthington Wrestler"

Judges comments: The winning images seemed to give a sense of the people being shown. The fact that they were all technically well done is a bonus.

Sports Feature
1st - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Champions Celebrate"
2nd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Cahminade-Julienne Celebration"
3rd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "State Champ"
HM - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Blue Jackets"

Judges comments: The winners all had images with very nice moments. The player reacting on the locker room floor made the 1st place shot.

Spot News
1st - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Head-on Crash"
2nd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Garage Fire"
3rd - William A. West, "Barn Fire"

Judges comments: A fairly weak category populated with fairly standard fire photos. First place rose to the top by virtue of the expression on the face  and hand gesture of the kneeling rescue worker. The placement of the firefighters in the frame and the fact that some were standing on the collapsed roof made the garage fire photo rise to 2nd.

Sports
1st - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Zeke Marshall"
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Most Muscular Award"
3rd - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Cavs Pacers"

Judges comments: This category is overrun with fair to middling sports images. The winners rose to the top for having good, moment/expressions that were well cropped.

Story
1st - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Tactical Defense"
2nd - Chris Russell , The Columbus Dispatch , "Boudoir Photos"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "State Wrestling"

Judges comments: This category was disappointing in that there were a lot of collections of images entered but almost no developed essays or stories.

Spot News
1st - Sam Greene, The (Lorain) Morning Journal, "Investigation"
2nd - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Rescued"
3rd - None

Judges comments: Two above were only ones that really stood apart. There were a bevy that could've grabbed third.

General News
1st - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Eye Clinic"
2nd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Tyrannosaurus"
3rd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Waving Goodbye"
HM - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Street Church"

Judges comments: Crop! Rex would've run away with it, but that worker hanging right side of the frame just took too much away.

Feature
1st - Andy Morrison, The (Toledo) Blade, "Flyover"
2nd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Lincolns"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Kite Flying"
HM - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch , "Aerial Arts"

Judges comments: Flyover took it hands down. Hilarious moment. We debated about whether Lincolns should have been cropped tighter to be just the one taking the selfie, but a good scene regardless. Stark qualities to KiteFlying and Silk.

Sports Action
1st - Michael Chritton, Akron Beacon Journal, "Fenced"
2nd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Sunglasses"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Highlight Pitch"
HM - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Safe at Home"

Judges comments: Liked Fenced and Sunglasses nearly equally, though the fence was just too comical to beat. We're suckers for dramatic light with third place pitch, and our HM was best of base action from softball/baseball, though a good batch of peak action was in this category as a whole.

Sports Feature
1st - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "High Fives"
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Goal"
3rd - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch , "Picture Perfect"
HM - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Rainout"

Judges comments: Fives was a winner with colors and emotion. Best jube was that Blue Jackets goal, others weren't cropped to be their best or just lacked the composition. Kudos to the honorable mention photog for working that rainout scene when just as easy to kick back.

Portrait
1st - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "In Memory of Dominae"
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Chess Whiz"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Senior Dating"

Judges comments: Nice concept and execution of Relay. Chesswiz was simple, but fun and nice moment from senior dating.

Story
1st - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Lincolns"
2nd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Honor Flight"
3rd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Transitions"

Judges comments: Great batch of angles and fun moments from Lincolns. Honor Flight had terrific moments, the best in the category, but needed to be tightened up by a few frames to overtake for first place. Good images from Transitions, good sense of victory and accomplishment from those faces.

Judges: From the Arizona Daily Star, Mike Christy, Kelly Presnell, and A.E. Araiza

Spot News
1st - Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, "I-70 Crash"
2nd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "House Fire"
3rd - Sam Greene, The (Lorain) Morning Journal, "Hot Spots"

Judge's comments: We felt this was the weakest category. More emotion in faces of photo subjects would have really upped the entries, as well as better peak action

General News
1st - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Homecoming"
2nd - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Apprehension"
3rd - William A. West, , "Memorial Day"
HM - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "TailWaggin' Tutor"

Judge's comments: Nice variety of images. Better crops on some images would have really made some of these image much stronger, but we could visualize many of them on the news page.

Feature
1st - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Rain Delay"
2nd - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Juming Rope"
3rd - Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, "Eagles"
HM - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Quilt Making"

Judge's comments: This had a really nice set of images. Very nice variety, angles, framing and emotions. It shows a lot of life and culture going on in the communities.

Sports Action
1st - Scott Heckel, The Repository, "Diving Outfielders"
2nd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Long Jump"
3rd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Sliding Toward Second"

Judge's comments: Another really strong group of images. Though like in general news, better crops would have made images better, mostly tighter to bring the action out. Images consistently captured peak action, which was nice.

Sports Feature
1st - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Cleveland Marathon"
2nd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "First Pitch"
3rd - Scott Heckel, The Repository, "Rain Delay"
HM - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Monarchs Celebration"

Judge's comments:This had some of the most creative and neat frames in all categories. Really nice use of feature in sports, using light and angles.

Portrait
1st - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Galleries"
2nd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Korean War Veteran"
3rd - Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, "Becca Carpenter"

Judge's comments: Some strong stuff here as well. Many had creative angles and brought something new to a portrait, while others were a bit too straightforward and lacked depth to properly show off the character. Some more creative lighting really would have boosted many of these, but we could tell the photographers were consciously thinking while making the images.

Picture Story
1st - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Motherhood"
2nd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Mental Health"
3rd - Lynn Ischay, The Plain Dealer, "Clinical Trials"

Judge's comments: Photo stories are hard, but a few of these really told an in-depth story in a concise way. “Motherhood” was the best example. It had depth and good imagery and told a great story that is historically and currently relevant. Other stories had single image that would have done very well in solo categories. Nice efforts and photo story ideas.

July 2013 Clip Contest Results

Feature
1st - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Community News, "Safety Town"
2nd - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Horse Jumper"
3rd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Red White Boom"
HM - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch , "Wheat Harvest"
HM - Daniel Kubus, Ohio University, "Dizzy"

Judges comments: A  strong category, but some of the photos in consideration for a place were moved to HM because of the lack of context, information, storytelling in the captions.  The first place photo is well framed and very humorous.  Overall, though, a very quiet set of images with very quiet moments.

General News
1st - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Rememberance"
2nd - Sam Greene, The (Lorain) Morning Journal, "Inclusive Playground"
3rd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Marine Recruits"
HM - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "On the Fence"

Judges comments: The first place photo has a strong moment and is compelling due to the focus of the photo and the expressions on the faces of others.

Portrait
1st - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Friends"
2nd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Rock Climber"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Diversity"
HM - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Tabernacle"

Judges comments: First place is a really sweet moment.  Great body language and framing.  However, a little more of the story behind the two women would
be nice.

Sports Feature
1st - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Community News, "Sea Dogs"
2nd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Color Run"
3rd - 3rd place - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Community News, "Relay Team Win"

Judges comments: A weak category overall.  First place is a thoughtful, quiet
moment.  Could have been better compositionally.  Bend those knees!

Spot News
1st - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Crash"
2nd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Rain"
3rd - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Remnants"

Judges comments: A weak category overall.  But credit the photographers for
arriving at the spot news events in a timely manner.  The first place
photo could be cleaned up a bit with some cropping.

Sports
1st - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Rodeo"
2nd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Triathlon"
3rd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Calf Scramble"
HM - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Junior Roller Girls"

Judges comments: First place is a great moment, and you really can't help the
background at rodeos.  Second place is very well framed with great light,
but the over sharpening hurts it.

Story
1st - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Pig Scramble"
2nd - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch , "Wheat Harvest"
3rd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Country Concert"

Judges comments: The fair story never gets old. It's shot well, has a good
narrative, and is diverse in range of the events of the fair.  Though the
harvest story is more thoughtful photographically than the country music
story, it lacks in diversity of moments and narrative.

August 2013 clip contest results

Spot News
1st - Scott Heckel, The (Canton) Repository, "Strapped In"
2nd - Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, "Car Fire"
3rd - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Fire"

Judges comments: First place was unique where second place had nice action but the difference in a standard spot news photo rose to first. Third place had potential but didn’t quite make it to second place quality.

General News
1st - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Juvenile Murderers"
2nd - Daniel Kubus, Ohio Univesity , "Frog Jumping"
3rd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Managed Care"

Judges comments: First place just had the moment, faces and body language that summed up the shot all in one frame and really fit the news criterium…Second place we thought might have fit better in the Feature category but great frame and moment from the “event”. Third place just had a nice personal moment that touched on the subject and what they go through. Nice frame.

Feature
1st - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Bubble Burst"
2nd - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Stained Glass"
3rd - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch, "Deer Kisses"
HM - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, “Happy” Meal
HM - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, “A Little Help”

Judges comments: One of the better categories! First place just had all the elements come together for a real nice slice of life. Second place was a little more pictorial but about as perfect as it could get! Third was a sweet moment of a rehab lady getting a deer kiss but watch those cropped off feet!!!! HM’s were just full of chuckles!!

Sports Action
1st - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Crew Header"
2nd - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Girls Soccer"
3rd - Andy Morrison, The (Toledo) Blade, "BMX Runover"

Judges comments: From working in this former state I expected more sports action…15 entries?? Whew! First was just awesome peak action and excellent body composition, easy pick for first! Second place was also the right moment at the right time-nice grab and third place was just unusual enough to place – way to be paying attention.

Sports Feature
1st - Scott Heckel, The (Canton) Repository, "Powder Toss"
2nd - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Grandma Brown"
3rd - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch , "Foul Catch"

Judges comments: Only 24 pics?? We had a hard time with this category…First place has been seen so many times but this was done well with great faces. Second had such a great story line but too busy of a photograph and we all wondered where was this story is Feature Multiple???? SO much potential??!! Third was fun but could have been better with a tighter crop!

Portrait
1st - Barbara J. Perenic, Springfield News-Sun, "Birthday Smile"
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Forced to Move"
3rd - Eamon Queeney , The Columbus Dispatch, "Footbal

Judges comments: First place stood out above the rest from the start and second and third were just composed, exposed and executed much better than the rest – really gave us a sense who these people were and what they were going through.

Story
1st - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Season Opener"
2nd - Lisa DeJong , The Plain Dealer, "Rape Locations"
3rd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Men's Camp"

Judges comments: Overall…real weak category…First place had the most storyline but could have used an edit and ended with a stronger photo. Second place was well thought out and a cool idea but a little too much tilt shift going on and although technically done very well, they really lacked visual storytelling…Great for a newspaper package but not as a clip contest entry. Third had so much potential – looked like a one assignment shoot?? Just pics thrown together?? Sounds harsh but there were no “stories” in this category….is this the nature of our business anymore?? We would have only given two places but rules say we must pick three.

Illustration

1st -Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Lentil Salad"
2nd - Andy Morrison, The (Toledo) Blade, "Spaghetti"
3rd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Chicken Cacciatore"

Judges comments: First place had a concept and a thought behind the execution. Second place also rose to the same execution but third place looked like it was sat by a window after the chef made it at the restaurant….this had potential with some lighting.

Judges: From the Indianapolis Star, staff photographers Matt Detrich, Brent Drinkut and Kelly Wilkinson

Spot News
1st - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Crash"
2nd - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Route 7 Fatality"

Judges comments: First place contained a lot of information in the frame, allowing the viewer to understand the scene quickly. Second place also contained a lot of information, but has no sense of urgency or immediacy.

General News
1st - Isaac Hale, Ohio University, "Vigil"
2nd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Roadside Memorial"
3rd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Remembering 9/11 "

Judges comments: We liked the composition in the first place picture, and well used candle light added a strong mood and enhanced the color palette. The second place picture shows good forethought and planning, although the composition and technicality of the frame wasn't as strong. Third place is a nice moment.

Feature
1st - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Silly"
2nd - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Grasshopper"
3rd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "War of 1812"
HM - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Tic-Tac-Toe"
HM - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Drummer"

Judges comments: First place lives up to its name. It's silly, it's fun, and it's a clean, well composed frame. Second place really caught our eye because of the bold color palette. Third place was a interesting scene and a good moment to boot. Both honorable mentions were good ideas, but were not executed as well compositionally as the others.

Sports
1st - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Umpire Tackled"
2nd - Tim Revell, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Pass Incomplete"
3rd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Making a Save"
HM - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Hand Full of Hair"
HM - Andy Morrison, The Blade, "Zip Flip"

Judges comments: First place stood out immediately. It's an incredibly unique moment that didn't suffer from severe cropping. The other entries that placed were all strong in their own right, but couldn't top the clean frame and moment of the first place photograph.

Sports Feature
1st - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Pick-up Football"
2nd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Murphy"
3rd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Celebrating a Sack"

Judges comments: The first place photograph was an interesting scene and well executed compositionally. The second place photograph was a wonderfully touching moment that made us want to know more about the kid. Third place is a great photograph that displays two team members at the height of their excitement.

Portrait
1st - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Bow Tie"
2nd - Sam Greene, The (Lorain) Morning Journal, "Boss "
3rd - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch , "Spirit"

Judges comments: We liked the light in the first place photograph. There's something about the kid's expression that makes us want to know more about the story. Second is a nice environmental portrait with a lot to look at, adding to the interpretation of this woman's personality. We liked that the photographer got the subject to express something other than a smile in the third place photograph.

Story
1st - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Murphy"
2nd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers, "Little Brown Jug"
3rd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "US Soccer"

Judges comments: First place showed the subject in a variety of different scenes, allowing us to connect with the boy in a more intimate way. Second place really gave us a feel for what it's like to be at these events. Third place did a good job of trying to cover all the angles of a sporting event that can otherwise be a series of action shots.

Winning images

Feature
1st - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Pooch"
2nd - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Postman"
3rd - Jonathan Quilter, Columbus Dispatch, "Haunted Village"

Judges comments:The first place image shows great seeing from the photographer to emphasize the size of this poodle while capturing a surprising amount of emotion on the dog's face. The details of the legs and sneakers make this image worth more than one look. Would have benefited from a slightly tighter crop from top and left. The second place image captured a nice, unexpected moment. The third place image captured a fun, playful moment.

General News
1st - Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal, "Plea"
2nd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Janitor Strike"
3rd - Sam Greene, The (Lorain) Morning Journal, "Bike-a-thon"

Judges comments:Great courtroom images are hard to come by, but the first place image in this category achieves that. The photographer framed the image very well to capture the emotion as well as the irony of the tattoos in this moment. The second place image captures the pride of the person under arrest while layering in some storytelling elements. The third place image shows nice seeing but lacks a decisive moment or emotion.

Portrait
1st - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Bullet in Skull"
2nd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Playwright"
3rd - Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer, "Tika"

Judges comments:Standout images in this category revealed some aspect of the subject's personality. The first place image combines nice light, interesting composition and a revealing expression that drives the viewer into the image. This portrait makes viewers want to learn more about this boy and his story. A nice find from an important news story.

Sports Feature
1st - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Bucks Win"
2nd - Joshua A. Bickel, ThisWeek Newspapers , "Cheer"
3rd - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Goal"

Judges comments: The first place images nicely combines three layers of information: the dejected player in the foreground with helmet up to nicely show emotion, the winning team coming together to celebrate and the crowd in jubilation. The second place image is a lovely moment where the subjects in the foreground are clear but the other people disappear into the cloud of baby powder. This is a nice angle on a different type of moment. The third place image shows great faces in the audience, combined with enough depth of field and framing to show the informative layer of the scoring reaction.

Spot News
1st - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Streaker"
2nd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Fatal"

Judges comments: This category has the fewest entries. The first place image captured an unexpected moment. The second image shows good emotion.

Sports
1st - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, ""
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Touchdown"
3rd - Chris Russell, The Columbus Dispatch, "Slippery"

Judges comments: The first place image is well-framed and well-positioned for a moment that makes any viewer wince. The second place image shows not only peak action of an important play, but also the reaction in the eyes of the other team. The third image is simply pleasing to see, a clean and interesting frame. Overall, images in this category would have benefited from tighter crops, more emotion and player's eyes.

1st - Eamon Queeney, The Columbus Dispatch, "Teens at War"
2nd - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Presidents Cup"
3rd - Barbara J. Perenic, The columbus Dispatch, "Arson"

Judges comments: The first place entry stood out in this category for breadth of thoughtfulness, reporting and time that was obviously put into it. Though there is some visual redundancy and weak individual images, the photographer is does a good job telling a story that can be difficult to illustrate. The story as a whole is stronger than the sum of its parts.
The second place entry shows rich variety in covering this sporting event, with a variety of nice images using a variety of photographic techniques. Any photo editor would be pleased to see this broad of a report to publish.
The third place entry shows a nice variety of images that work together to tell a story. The piece would have been stronger without the final image.

Judges: Danny Gawlowski from The Seattle Times and Josie Liming from MSN.com
